2025 Elections - Choose Your Champions, Shape the Valley
16th September 2025
Heads up, Valley residents—you’ve got decisions to make! The Dunedin and Otago local body elections are fast approaching. Postal voting is now open for the Dunedin City Council election—including the mayor, city councillors, community boards—as well as for the Otago Regional Council, which oversees freshwater, buses, pest control, and more across the region. Why is reading up on every single candidate your new favourite hobby? Because every voice in this election—from mayor to community board hopeful—is asking for your trust. Each candidate has different ideas about how they’ll make life better in North East Valley and beyond. So ask …

Group Effort Rebuilding North East Valley History
1st December 2022
"I think it was a success! Sarah seemed to get a lot of notes and contacts from those present. Interest seemed quite high." Peter Begg, Secretary of the Dunedin North Men's Probus Club, was pleased to see the community response to the second instalment of NEV history talks presented by local historian, Sarah Gallagher, and listing advisor, Alison Breese. "We are always working hard to become more involved in the community," Peter ensures. It was a full house of 50-plus guests at last month's meeting which served as another 'step' in collaborations with Heritage New Zealand to rebuild our …

Waste Minimisation by Rebecca Harris - Waste Auditing
5th May 2022
Food waste is a huge issue! On average, every NZer creates 60+ kgs of food waste a year! Some more tips from Becks in this video can help you think about how to reduce your personal food waste. Do a waste audit - what do you throw away often and how can you avoid it? i.e. for Becks, it wasn't always the food itself but instead the packaging. Go to Bin Inn or buy from bulk tubs in the supermarket. If your audit shows you're throwing things out because they've gone past their best before-date, remember these dates are …

KRYSHA BRZUZA, NEWISH EDITOR EAGER TO CONNECT
5th March 2022
KRYSHA BRZUZA, NEW VALLEY PROJECT EDITOR & COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR Howdy! Krysha (KRIH-SHAH) here. I'm the one responsible for the recent changes you may have noticed in the Valley Voice formatting and the newsletter's advertising programme. Having a Media Arts background, I simply couldn't help myself! From the first day I clocked in at the Valley Project it was evident my experience with the organisation was going to be a life-changer. It was also immediately noted that my role as editor and communications coordinator was heavily dependent on networking. Indeed, establishing connections within this community is a primary goal. How …

LONGTIME VP STAFF MEMBER, CHARLOTTE WILSON, BIDS HEARTFELT ADIEU
5th March 2022
STAFF DEPARTURE - CHARLOTTE WILSON After arriving back in Dunedin in 2010 following work as a primary school teacher in Vietnam for a number of years, I was employed part-time at North East Valley Normal School as the ESOL teacher and ran the Valley Club, an afterschool programme for children considered to be “at risk”. Here they received some kai and homework support, as well as opportunities to participate in a range of activities and to develop positive relationships with adults. I attended North East Valley and then DNI as a kid and my mum grew up in Opoho …

Tamariki Lunchbox Workshop
16th February 2022
We have a range of workshops planned for the coming months. They aim to improve people’s knowledge around food by providing helpful tips, tricks, and recipes across a range of topics including school lunches, preserving surplus, reducing your food waste, and cooking on a budget. There has also been interest in cooking international cuisine, using fresh herbs, and vegan cooking. We would love more support running these workshops. If you think you could help, please email valleykai@northeastvalley.org. Our first workshop will be focusing on economic, quick, easy, and healthy lunch ideas for tamariki school lunchboxes. This will run …

Crush The Cargill 2021
5th February 2022
Happy New Year, friends! While you were likely making frenzied laps through Dunedin malls as the holidays were closing in, records were being made as Crush the Cargill participants vertically lapped all 676 metres of Mount Cargill! Let's catch you up... The annual Valley Project fundraising event involves a 24-hour endurance race up and down our beloved Kapukataumahaka, the mountain dominating Dunedin's northern skyline. Starting from its base at Bethune's Gully, dozens of audacious runners take to its slopes at 10am sharp to achieve as many full laps as possible by 10am the next day. A singular lap …
