Curiously Consulting on the Creek
What is your vision for Lindsay Creek? This is the question on the minds of the Open VUE Steering Group at the moment. While the vision for an open urban unfenced ecosanctuary still proudly stands tall amongst the urban forest, the Creek is a large piece of the Valley ecosystem puzzle. Gaining insight into your vision of Lindsay creek in 5, 10, 20, and 100 years will direct the mahi’s flow. The group is putting out preliminary consultation feelers while we are limited to gather, with plans for wider community consultation early next year.
The journey of the Creek, and the pathway it travels is known to us in its current form - what did it look like in the past, and what could it look like in the future? How do you currently interact with the creek, or how would you like to in the future?

Lindsay Creek drains from Mount Cargill (Kapuka-tau-mahaka), winding its way along the valley floor, fed by many small tributaries, eventually meeting the Water of Leith at the Botanic gardens. On its journey, Lindsay Creek passes through a mosaic of different habitat types, including the shady Bethune’s Gully, under the bridge at Bonnington Street, sneaking past and through urban backyards and eventually meeting up with Water of Leith. Under the water’s surface, tuna, macroinvertebrates, fish, crayfish among many others live. River shags, ducks, paradise shelducks, can often be seen feasting or frolicking amongst the waters. I have even seen a kererū perched at the creek’s edge taking a sip of water!
