A passion for the environmental benefits of electric cars has inspired North East Valley resident Pam McKinley to organise a city-wide education event about electric vehicles.

A passion for advocating about climate change and some of its lesser talked about effects such as increasing ocean acidification are what inspires North East Valley resident Pam McKinley to continue educating people about electric cars.

“What comes out of the back of your car goes up into the atmosphere, but comes down into our oceans,” says Pam. “Electric vehicles are great for the environment and your wallet.”

The McKinley family of four have had their electric car for four years and it does everything they need it to do, from running errands around to town, to taking a family trip to Wanaka.

Pam estimates it costs them $10–$12 per week to recharge their car.

Electric car event in Dunedin this month

Pam is organizing electric vehicle events around Dunedin as part of the Better NZ Trust Leading the Charge Electric Vehicle Road Trip 2019, in which electric vehicle owners and enthusiasts travel from Cape Reinga to Bluff. They will be stopping over in Dunedin from 9–12 April.

Some of the local events on at the same time include an electric vehicle park-up and display in the Octagon on Wednesday 10 April from 10am–2pm, and in the evening an educational film screening of Revenge of the Electric Car in the Hutton Theatre, Otago Museum from 5.30pm–7.30pm.

The next day the Leading the Charge drivers will be visiting the Albatross Colony and Orokonui Ecosanctuary to make the connection between lowering emissions and direct effects already being experienced in our environment.
