Kai Share

Kai Share Food Boxes

Kai Share is a North East Valley initiative run by volunteers that provides short-term food or kai assistance to local whānau and people in need.

Thanks to KiwiHarvest,  we're currently able to give boxes of rescued kai and grocery items to about 35 whānau or households every week through the Kai Share Programme at the Valley Project.

We know that the cost of living crisis means that many people are finding it hard to put healthy kai on the table for themselves and their whānau. Unexpected costs like a really high energy bill, a car break-down, or a job loss, can mean people need short-term help with kai while they deal with those things.

Kai Share is a local programme open to people living in North East Valley - that includes the suburbs of Dalmore, Gardens, Liberton, Mount Mera, Mt Cargill, Normanby, North East Valley, Ōpoho, Pine Hill, Signal Hill and Upper Junction.

The boxes are made up of food we receive from KiwiHarvest every Friday. Although we have no control over the type or quantity of kai we receive each week, our fabulous team of Kai Share volunteers works hard to pack a box that meets the needs of each participant and their whānau. They do their best to consider the make-up of each household and any special dietary or health-related food needs.

How long can people get support from Kai Share?

  • Once confirmed on Kai Share, people will get a weekly box of kai for six (6) weeks.

  • In week 6, people can re-apply to Kai Share for another six-week block if they still need support. They will be added to the waitlist. The Valley Project staff will contact participants to tell them when their next six-week block will start.

When do boxes need to be picked up?

  • Boxes need to be picked up from the Valley Project on Fridays between 3.00pm and 3.30pm. If people can’t get there on time, they can make special arrangements with the Kai Share Team to pick up their box later in the day, or can ask a friend or neighbour to pick up their box for them. Boxes must be collected on Fridays.

  • If there has not been any communication from participants by 3.30pm on Friday and they do not come to collect their box, the kai will be redistributed into other boxes.
