An English conversation group has started up at the Valley Project community rooms

The group is an informal gathering where those who are learning to speak English can come along and talk with native English speakers.

Group facilitator Carolyn Rogers says it is not a group to provide lessons or tutoring. “It is going to be a relaxed way to practise English and make some new friends.”

Carolyn recently returned from teaching in Abudabi, and after trying to learn another language herself she understands how challenging it can be: “I tried to learn Arabic in six years, but it is a very difficult language and I know just a little.”

The first meeting, held last week, was a great start with lots of topics discussed and connections made.

People began by introducing themselves and talking about their families and backgrounds. Then everybody was paired up to discuss their hobbies.

One pair discovered a shared love of cooking and the English speaker offered to bring along some fresh herbs to help the English leaner to learn the names and any herbs that might be unknown.

The group meets from noon–2pm on Fridays at the community rooms, 262 North Rd.

There is no cost, but bring your own lunch or something to share. To find out more contact Charlotte at charlotte@northeastvalley.org.
